Act On It by Sam Deep and Lyle Sussman

The full title of this book by Sam Deep and Lyle Sussman is

Act On It: Solving 101 of the Toughest Management Challenges

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book a rating of Four Stars. This means it is Good and Well Worth Reading.

Here is my book review.

A handy reference to keep within arm’s reach

Some may think Google has made this book redundant. If you have a question, you can just go to your favourite search engine and ask “the wise men” out there.

Personally I feel there is still a use for the book. It’s hard to know who is giving the answers on Google and whether they are qualified. Yes you can read three answers but what if they are all fools?

The book introduced the framework of ACT.

  • A = analyse your situation
  • C = choose the best strategy
  • T = track your choice

Makes sense. I’d argue there is a step missing between C and T but it is summed up by the acronym itself, you act on your decision.

This framework is then used with the answers to the 101 tough challenges.

The challenges themselves are split into

  • Personal effectiveness
  • Communication
  • Employee accountability
  • Employee empowerment
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Co-workers
  • Boss
  • Personal career

The idea is you dip into the book as you need to, jumping from question to question as the connections are shown or perhaps you develop the habit of reading one each lunchtime to help you be more prepared.

I like this book a lot. It is packed with practical, common sense. The authors have developed a good reputation for writing questions and answers books.

Four or five stars. I’ve gone on the low side for two reasons.
1) I haven’t read them all.
2) it’s written for middle managers in large businesses.

If this was written for business owners, I think there are plenty of questions and answers that are relevant but I also think there would be differences. As the business owner, you have the power to make the changes you want. There’s no boss to worry about or company policies that must be followed, since they can be changed.

You can buy the book at Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com
