Balanced Scorecard Step-by-Step by Paul R Niven

The full title of this book by Paul Niven is

Balanced Scorecard Step-by-Step: Maximizing Performance and Maintaining Results“.

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave this book a rating of Four Stars. This means I think it is Good and Well Worth Reading.

Here is my book review.

Very clear explanation of the balanced scorecard as a performance measurement system

This is a terrific book that explains both the logic of the balanced scorecard and the supporting strategy maps and how to implement it.

The book is packed with practical tips from this consultant who has advised many companies on their performance measurement projects. It’s a much more practical book than the Kaplan and Norton books that are busy selling the idea of the Balanced Scorecard.

There are two reasons why it doesn’t get five stars:

1) Important information is presented in tables and diagrams and not properly discussed in the main text. This won’t be a problem with the printed version but if you’re reading the kindle version on a normal kindle reader, it is a significant problem. Some tables are readable with eye strain, others aren’t.

I bought it on Kindle, returned it and bought a second hand paper version.

2) The author released this second edition in 2006 after the first edition came out (I think) in the late 1990s. It’s time for a new version. I have just checked and the author has a 2014 book Balanced Scorecard Evolution: A Dynamic Approach to Strategy Execution which doesn’t yet have any reviews in amazon.co.uk

Four stars feels mean for such a good book but that’s the paradox of a book reviewer.

It is available to buy from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com.
