Beat the Recession by Nicholas Bate

The full title of this book by Nicholas Bate is

Beat the Recession: A Blueprint for Business Survival

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book Two Stars.

Here is my review.

A worthy aim but it fails to deliver anything of substance

This is a book of 176 tips to help you to improve your business so that it survives the recession.

That’s a worthy aim but this book fails to deliver anything of substance.

Very roughly there’s a page per tip but half of each tip is filled with a shaded box for you to write down your intended action. I’m all in favour of a workbook but the words written are uninspiring. It’s hard to argue against them as they are basic, good management which you should be doing whether the economy is in recession or it isn’t.

The book needs something to help readers understand the urgency of taking action e.g. explaining break even analysis and market trend analysis plus something to help prioritise the actions. That way, you’d be much closer to getting the promised blueprint for business survival.

If your business is under threat from a recession or a decline in the market, you have limited time to fix things and, depending on the state of your business, that time may be very short.

This is a poor book on a vital subject and despite the fact that it’s available very cheaply, in both new and second hand conditions, you shouldn’t be tempted. There are better books on the topic of managing through difficult times and turning around a business.
