The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results
In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book Three Stars. This means it is Worthwhile.
Ask yourself why The One Thing is a long book.
This book caused me to have mixed feelings.
The idea that you should focus on the area where you can have the biggest impact on performance makes a great deal of sense. It’s the logic for the weakest link of the chain and the main idea behind the Theory of Constraints. [continue reading…]

31 Causes of Failure by Sally Pederson
posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book Two Stars. This means it is Disappointing.
Here is my book review.
Disappointing look at personal failure
The book looks at reasons for personal failure rather than business failure although the two will be linked for business owners.
I felt a little uncomfortable when the first reason given was genetic issues. Isn’t failure relative to potential rather than absolute?
My problems with the book didn’t stop there but continued. I found I agreed with the headline cause identified but not with the words explaining the cause which seemed to wander off the subject.
I gave up on the book at around the 20% mark.

Doesn’t live up to the title
This “book” is just an excuse for the author to tell his story as an academy study.
I didn’t feel it lived up to the title and was a waste of my time. I don’t like writing one and two star reviews but I can’t recommend this book to anyone wanting to start a business.
There are plenty of good books to help you get your startup right including books that warn you about what not to do.

I am a prolific reader and reviewer of business books on Amazon.co.uk and I get really irritated when the reviews get overwhelmed with fake stuff.
How can you tell?
Well there is the nature of the review for one but, it is even more reliable to go and have a look at what else the reviewer has reviewed.
You can find plenty of occasions where the reviewer has reviewed six books, all been given five stars and a rave review and they are all by the same author.
Unfortunately it takes time to click on everyone.
An easier way is to use Fakespot.com which will do the analysis for you. [continue reading…]

10 Things You Need to Know to Turnaround Your Business Problems
by Alyson Ogilvie-Lee posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book Two Stars. This means it is Disappointing.
Could have been better
The author quotes statistics about business failures in Australia and, just like in the UK, far too many businesses close.
She says that paralysed management is a major cause. The business owners know there is a problem but can’t face up to dealing with it. Gradually it gets worse until the final cash flow crisis makes it impossible to continue. [continue reading…]

Aggressively sarcastic but it makes some important points about protecting yourself and loved ones
I’m surprised there aren’t more books about negative planning, that is, thinking about what can go wrong and doing something about the risk. [continue reading…]

A short introduction to direct response marketing
I’m not too sure about the corny book title but this is an introduction to direct response marketing as popularised by well known marketers Jay Abraham and Dan Kennedy.
I believe this has been compiled from a seven day email course or several sources rather than written as a normal book. This is fine as far as I’m concerned. I used to wait until I could read all the emails together when I’d subscribed to an email course. [continue reading…]
