Mixed feelings
I have mixed feelings about this book.
It suddenly inserts lists of points without any introduction into the text. The lists are useful but they jar with the narrative. [continue reading…]

Redesign to Turnaround Underperforming Small and Medium-Sized Businesses
In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book only One Star.
Here is my book review.
It needs better editing
This is an important topic since too many business owners struggle to achieve consistently high numbers. Unfortunately the book would benefit from a tough editor because it doesn’t read smoothly.
It takes a lot of effort to write a book but self-publishing and especially Kindle publishing mean that a lot of people are able to get books into the market when either a) they are not natural writers or b) don’t have much to say. [continue reading…]

A useful book to think through customer experience issues
Reading this book feels a bit strange because I think it is a transcript of an audio or video course, since the author keeps referring to course rather than book. [continue reading…]

The Best Trading Lessons of Jesse Livermore

Here is my book review.
Interesting thoughts
Livermore was a legendary American stock trader who made and lost fortunes including making the equivalent (in today’s money)of more than $1 billion by shorting the 1929 crash and then losing it.
In 1940 he wrote a book called “How To Trade Stocks” which recorded the lessons he had learned, before he committed suicide later that year, leaving a $5 million estate (old money) that he had salted away in trusts during the good times. [continue reading…]

The Incredible Profit Pulling Power of Client Reactivation
by Everte Farnell posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave this book Three Stars. This means it is Worthwhile.
Here is my book review.
The two sections that don’t fit together
What we have here is a book with two parts.
The first is a short report by Everte Farnell on how to use direct mail to get back in contact with customers who have stopped buying from you with the intention of getting some of them to start buying again. These old customers are an important source of potential profit and, while what is written here is useful, much more could be said.
The second is an introduction to a book by Dan Kennedy which has been licensed by Everte Farnell. Kennedy says that he’s boiled down success to ONE ingredient but he’s not going to tell us in this book, just give us clues. Napoleon Hill did the same trick by referring to a hidden secret in “Think & Grow Rich” but that had plenty of content. This just has a simple message of “get into action”. That may be Kennedy’s main message too.

The Single Easiest Way to Grow – Winning Back Lost Customers
In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book Three Stars, this means it is Worthwhile.
Here is my book review.
Some good ideas but little real detail
This is very short – just 5 pages according to Amazon and while it has a few good ideas, it has little real detail.
A more substantial book is needed on this topic since the book title describes it as “the single easiest way to grow”.
So much attention is given to attracting new customers and plenty has been written about customer loyalty and retention but winning back customers who have stopped buying, for whatever reason is a neglected area.

Very disappointing
I had high hopes for this book but unfortunately I’m left feeling it is “intellectual claptrap”. I know that sounds harsh but let me explain.
It’s one of those books that you can read paragraphs and get no meaning from and, when you go back to read them again, you realise that it’s describing something obvious to anyone who has commercial experience but it’s dressed up in corporate-business-speak. [continue reading…]

I thought this was a book focused on one part of copywriting
I thought this was a book focused on one part of copywriting, the call to action. Unfortunately, it’s not.
What we actually have is a short summary of the entire copywriting process. It’s done well but if you want to learn about copywriting, you need much more guidance than is offered here.
This might whet your appetite for a more extensive book.

Not nearly as helpful as I’d hoped
I had high hopes for this book but it turned out to be a major disappointment.
Let’s put to one side the fact that it’s written for the American market so some of the contents is wrong as far as UK businesses are concerned and that it is old. Much of what’s involved with turning around a business hasn’t changed over the years. [continue reading…]
