Here is my review.

A practical guide if you want to start a blog

This short book is written to help you have the confidence to start a blog.

The book has three main topics:

1 – Guidance to opt for a paid set-up rather than free blogging platform.
2 – How to choose and buy a domain name.
3 – How to set up the necessary technical details to build a WordPress blog. This includes buying hosting, installing WordPress, choosing a theme, selecting plugins and a few extras.

There are a few things I disagree with.

First there’s little point having a blog unless you’re going to publish content regularly. This takes more time and effort than you might expect and is disheartening if few people see your fascinating articles. If money is quite tight, I think it’s well worth running with a free blog for a few months. There’s no point spending money f you’re not going to keep it up.

Secondly he suggests creating a brand name blog. This works fine if you’ve got the time and money to get the brand known but it is hard to do. Just think how hard it is to remember a name of someone you meet and a blog won’t have that impact. The benefit in Google of keyword based domains has long gone but I write a blog about recorded live music and it’s called Best Live Albums. It does what it says on the tin. People would struggle to remember it if I’d called it Paul Simister’s Guide.

The book recommends some plugins but none of them are security based. WordPress blogs are easy to hack and especially if things aren’t kept up to date.

Despite these issues, it does tell you how to go through the process of creating your blog in a nice, clear way.
