I my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave this small book called
“Quality Pocketbook” by Anthony Mitchell
a Four Star rating. This means I think it is Good and Well Worth Reading.
Here is my book review.
An easy to read overview of what used to be known as Total Quality Management
The Pocketbook series of books are small books presented in a note form and with plenty of diagrams and white space. They are designed to present the key ideas quickly and simply.
This meets that objective very well even though it is half the size of a normal book and only 106 pages long. It’s a great book for people who want to know about the ideas that underpin quality – or for people who want a refresher – but don’t want heavy reading.
The contents are organised into eight sections
1 – What is quality
2 – Quality & profit
3 – Implementation
4 – Who can we copy from
5 – Performance measurement
6 – Quality systems
7 – TQM in Europe
8 – Checklist
You rarely see the mention of “Total Quality” any more but that does not reduce the impact of the ideas of the total quality movement and the need to eliminate variation in performance, to eliminate waste and errors, to bring out the best ideas from the people who are doing the work, to measure by fact based on valid performance measures and to pick up improvement ideas for the processes through benchmarking.
I rate the book at the 4 stars level which is a buy recommendation. It is a great overview but it’s not the book to buy if you want to go into the Total Quality ideas in detail. That said, the more detailed books I’ve read can be heavy going and I normally like to see the big picture before I delve in too deep.Business Books Reviews by Paul Simister (Please click).
