A nice mental model of the buying process

Copywriters have talked about the slippery slope or greasy slide for many years. It’s a metaphor for building up momentum as the copy is read, as the person moves from “this looks interesting ” to “I must have this in my life, right now”. [continue reading…]

A very nice guide to AdWords but it was published in 2012

This is a classy book about Google AdWords which does a great job of explaining how pay per click advertising works and how you can bend the system to work in your favour. [continue reading…]

Good 2016 guide to AdWords but already out of date

This book is written by two Duct Tape Marketing consultants (Duct Tape Marketing is an excellent book or small business owners ).

Although it was published in 2016, Google have made significant changes in the way the ads are shown (no right hand column ) and they have made the ads themselves significantly larger which puts more emphasis on copywriting. [continue reading…]

In my review on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book a Four Star rating. This means I think it is good.

Packed with sensible advice on how to improve your SEO in a Google friendly way.

This is a very good book about search engine optimisation and the importance of following Google’s guidelines both to the letter and to their spirit.

The author tells how SEO used to be easy in the good old days before the Panda and Penguin crackdowns because someone in the know could take the steps needed to get onto the first page of Google with relative ease and with effort get into the top spots for all but the most popular phrases. In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book a Four Stars rating. This means I consider it to be Good.

Here is my book review.

A very good introduction to the issues of local search engine optimisation

This book presents a choice if you have a local business and want it to be found easily on the Internet:

  1. Pay an SEO consultant between $1,000 and $2,500 to do the necessary work for you; or
  2. Do it yourself (or delegate to a trusted employee) provided you “have an additional 10-15 hours per month (maybe more in the beginning) to put towards this process”.

Invisible Selling Machine by Ryan Deiss – 5 Stars

The full title of this book by Ryan Deiss is

Invisible Selling Machine: 5 Steps To Crafting an Automated Evergreen Email Campaign That Literally Makes Sales While You Sleep“.

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I rated this book at the Five Stars level. This means I consider it to be Excellent.

Here is my book review.

Very good book about how to structure your email marketing campaigns.

For some years, Ryan Deiss has been one of my three favourite Internet marketing experts because:

  1. He’s active in many different markets, not just the make money online market.
  2. He’s committed to testing ideas and seeing which work best, tweaking and then testing again.
  3. He doesn’t pad out his training with irrelevant details to waste your time.

Those three qualities can be seen in this book as well as his normal, more expensive, training programs. [continue reading…]

A book with a story, withdrawn because the ideas were “too dangerous”

This book has a legendary reputation for being issued and then withdrawn because the “secrets are too dangerous for people to know”.

Upsells Unleashed by Veena Prashanth

Upsells Unleashed: How to Hack Your Sales Funnel to Double Your Profits Using Upsells – With Your Existing Traffic and Existing Customers“.

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave this book a rating of Four Stars. This means it is Good and Well Worth Reading.

Here is my book review.

Mainly focused on upsells for Internet marketing

The author is the entrepreneur behind some software for membership websites and some plugins including one for automating upsells.

This has two implications:

1) her own software is frequently featured but no other software is which makes you feel this is a not-so-disguised selling pitch.
2) the focus is very much on Internet marketing so for most businesses who sell primarily through personal contact, the book offers little. [continue reading…]

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I rated this at Four Stars. That means I think it is Good and Well Worth Reading.

Here is my book review.

A useful but general introductory guide to sales funnels

With a title about business growth barriers, I was expecting a book about the main constraints small businesses face. It isn’t.

Instead this is a short, low cost guide to understanding how to get prospective customers to identify themselves as interested by asking for a free information product and then turn them into customers, first by offering a very low cost item (called a tripwire), and then increasing values and encouraging them to buy again and again.
