Marketing Mix

The 7 P’s of Marketing

I wrote a very popular article about the marketing mix:

Marketing Mix: 4 P’s or 7 P’s of Marketing or Extended Even More?

I then extended it to look at the different versions with widely different P’s. I’ve now decided to have separate articles for each of the different number of marketing P’s.

The original marketing mix that has become widely known is Product, Price, Promotion and Place.

The 7 P’s of Marketing

Version 1 (the marketing mix for service businesses)

  • Price
  • Place
  • Product
  • Promotion
  • People
  • Processes
  • Physical evidence

I think this version makes a great deal of sense for service businesses.

As an example, think about a restaurant.

In terms of physical evidence, the building, the decoration of the room, the quality of the table and chairs, cutlery and glassware will all help to form an impression. So will the food itself – how it looks, smells and tastes.

Then there are the people. Front of house, the quality of waiter or waitress service can make a big difference. The chef may be particularly talented and even a celebrity.

Finally the processes are important because they make sure that service is consistent. You do want to go to a restaurant and have a great meal, decide to take friends and have it turn into a disaster because what was done so well before, has suddenly become a disaster.

Version 2

In this version of the 7 P’s of marketing, processes and physical evidence are replaced with positioning and packaging.

  • Product
  • Prices
  • Promotion
  • Place
  • Packaging
  • Positioning
  • People

http://www.entrepreneur.com/marketing/article70824.html

Version 3

Here Place is dropped from the original marketing mix and Position is brought in. While Place usually refers to the distribution routes to market, position identifies how the business fits in with competitors. Otherwise it is very similar to the service marketing mix.

  • Price
  • Position
  • Product
  • Promotion
  • People
  • Processes
  • Physical evidence

How Many P’s Are There In Marketing?

One of the best known models to help marketers and business owners to succeed with their marketing plans is the Marketing Mix.

Background To The P’s Of Marketing

Originally this was developed and became famous as the 4 P’s Of Marketing.

It’s been around for years and in the nineties I was taught an updated version for service marketing, the 7 P’s Of Marketing.

I wrote about these in a blog article that at its peak was being read several thousand times per month.

Marketing Mix: 4 P’s or 7 P’s of Marketing or Extended Even More?

I contrasted the 4 P’s and 7 P’s Of Marketing and criticised them for missing out some important issues.

Development Of A New P’s Of Marketing Model

I was helped by a few other marketing models I had seen.

As I thought about marketing, I became fascinated with how many words that are important begin with P.

Sometimes I had to get a little contrived. I finished up with the 27 P’s Of Marketing.

I wasn’t serious that it could be used as a model for building a marketing strategy, plan or campaign but it did raise some important issues.

I then started searching for other alternative versions of the Marketing Mix.

I was overwhelmed with what I found as different marketers tried to come up with their own original version.

Sometimes they would change a P, other times, add a P or two…

I’ve written summary blog articles.

The 15 P’s Of Marketing

I wrote a very popular article about the marketing mix:

I then extended it to look at the different versions with widely varying number of  P’s. I’ve now decided to have separate articles for each of the different number of marketing P’s.

http://intern.internship-uk.com/modern-marketing-the-15-ps-of-marketing/

This is interesting because it takes the original and most famous version of the 4 P’s Of marketing.

It then adds the next three to create the 7Ps Service Marketing Mix.

Four more P’s were added to reflect online marketing – privacy, personal interest, personal networks and public commentary to reflect the new power of the consumer to be heard through social media reviews.

Idris Mootee developed a “New 4Ps” model of Nomadic Marketing in 2001 to supplement the traditional marketing mix by adding Personalization, Participation, Peer-to-Peer and Predictive Modelling.

Personalisation refers to how products and services can be increasingly customised. Participation refelects the new two-way conversation for what a brand stands for. Peer to peer recognises the growing influence of other customers to influence buying decisions through referral and recommendations and predictive modelling is the clever stuff that predicts the probability of outcomes.

And here is another 15 P’ s of marketing which are difficult to pick up.

The 14 P’s Of Marketing

I took a very detailed look at the better known marketing mixes – the 4 P’s of Marketing and the 7 P’s of Marketing in this blog article:

Marketing Mix: 4 P’s or 7 P’s of Marketing or Extended Even More?

I started thinking about other P’s that are meaningful to marketing and researched what other writers thought.

The other versions I’ve written about are:

I didn’t find a 13 P’s Of Marketing when I looked although there is probably one now. Perhaps people thought it would be tempting fate because of superstitions around unlucky number 13.

The 12 P’s of Marketing

I wrote a very popular article about the marketing mix:

Version 2

I quite like this version although it is cheating to make the point – marketing is about people. There are six fairly standrd marketing P’s – product, place, price, promotion, packaging and positioning but people repeated six times.

The Various 5 P’s Of Marketing

In this article I will look at different versions of the 5 P’s Of Marketing.

The Background

I wrote a very popular article about the marketing mix:

Marketing Mix: 4 P’s or 7 P’s of Marketing or Extended Even More?

I then extended it to look at the different versions with widely different P’s. I’ve now decided to have separate articles for each of the various numbers of marketing P’s.

The Original 4 P’s Of Marketing

The original marketing mix that has become widely known is Product, Price, Promotion and Place.

The Various 5 P’s of Marketing

I’ve got three different versions for you to consider below but I’ve taken a more detailed look in another blog at the 5 P’s Of marketing.

Version 1

Very similar to the traditional 4 P’s with Participation added.

  • Product
  • Price
  • Place
  • Promotion
  • Participation – engage in a conversation between the brand and customers

I picked up this version from http://www.collegerecruiter.com/consumer-marketers-blog/general/the-5-ps-of-marketing/

Unfortunately the page doesn’t exist any more.

The growth of social media and the chance to have a two-way conversation with a business has definitely added participation to the possible marketing mix.

It’s always been good advice to talk to and listen to customers but now there might be an expectation that things happen because of participation.

Version 2 – The 5 P’s Of marketing And Seller Relations

This version is much more radical as it only includes promotion from the normal marketing mix model. It’s been developed for the real estate industry.
I’m not sure about the inclusion of perfection although you should aim to continually improve marketing while it’s cost-effective.
  • Promotion
  • Position
  • Perfection
  • Preparation
  • Positive attitude

http://www.nextlevelsolutionsforrealestate.com/The-5-Ps-of-Marketing-and-Seller-Relations.html

The three-way relationship between seller, buyer and agent brings together some interesting marketing issues.

Version 3 5 fundamental principles of marketing

Fraser Hay (as mentioned above and one of the reasons why I started to think about all the different P’s that can related to marketing strategy and practice)

  • Positioning
  • Packaging
  • Promotion
  • Persuasion
  • Performance

Sorry I can’t find a short link for you on this one.
