How to Get Your Web Content DONE!: How to write, what to write, and why you’re writing it

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book a 4 Stars rating. This means the book is good and well worth reading.

Here is my book review.

Short guide to your website packed with common sense

This book won’t take you long to read, probably between 30 to 60 minutes but it will lead you into taking action on your website, whether it’s a new one with blank pages or an existing, under-performing one.

I agree with much of what it says about the purpose and contents for your home page, about pages, products and services page etc. [continue reading…]

Here is my book review.

Part SEO guide and part copywriting guide.

A useful guide to preparing copy for a website.

I wasn’t entirely convinced by the advice on writing for Google. Ten years ago it used to be fairly easy to write for a high search engine ranking position but Google have deliberately made it much harder to predict. Updates called Panda and Penguin punished aggressive action. [continue reading…]

Disappointing

I had high hopes of this book when I bought it soon after its release but I was left disappointed.

Writing for the Internet is different from writing long form sales letters. It’s much easier to get people to start reading but, with plenty of other information a couple of clicks away, it’s much harder to keep them reading. [continue reading…]

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave it Three Stars.

Here is my review.

The short book has quite a wide scope

The book starts with a waffle on content management systems which is more relevant for people who want to buy a website and less relevant for those of us who have made the decision.

After that, the book has sensible tips to help give visitors confidence and to encourage them to take action. [continue reading…]

Useful list of things to consider

This short book presents a list of items that can help to improve conversions that range from common sense to technical solutions.

It always surprises me how difficult some businesses make it to contact them so, if you want phone calls, put your phone number in the top right hand corner. I prefer emails because I work on the phone and my email address is there. [continue reading…]

A guide for copywriting on websites

I don’t understand what’s written in this book before chapter 1 because it seems to be promoting another book.

It’s a disconcerting start and one that won’t impress people who try the kindle sample.

Unfortunately it’s a true reflection of the book which is about copywriting for the Internet. The writing is terrible and it’s hard to believe the author has read through it once, let alone edited it carefully himself and then passed it to someone else to read and give feedback.

I gave up at the 37% mark. I was struggling to find coherent sentences let alone a paragraph where a series of well structured sentences flowed one after another.

A nice mental model of the buying process

Copywriters have talked about the slippery slope or greasy slide for many years. It’s a metaphor for building up momentum as the copy is read, as the person moves from “this looks interesting ” to “I must have this in my life, right now”. [continue reading…]

The Justification Point: What Stops Your Customers From Buying Online and How to Change It – NOW!

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave it 3 Stars.

Here is my review.

A summary of the things that matter when selling online but not the interesting concept I’d expected

I like the idea of a “justification point” which the author describes as the “exact moment when the scale is tipped and your customer actually makes the purchase.”

Sadly the book wasn’t as good or as focused as I wanted. The subtitle of the book is “What Stops Your Customers From Buying Online and How to Change It” and therefore I was expecting a list of reasons why customers look at a webpage and decide to click away rather than move forward. Small Businesses Don’t Get The Most Out Of Their Websites

A survey by Microsoft of 400 small businesses has discovered that many waste a lot of money producing websites that can’t be found in the search engines.

It seems that too many firms don’t know how to promote their website or think that it is too complicated or expensive.

To some extent this is an “I win, you lose” situation as only 10 websites can be on the first page of Google at any one time. [continue reading…]
