The 3 P’s Of Marketing

I wrote a very popular article about the marketing mix:

Marketing Mix: 4 P’s or 7 P’s of Marketing or Extended Even More?

I then extended it to look at the different versions with widely different P’s. I’ve now decided to have separate articles for each of the different number of marketing P’s.

The original marketing mix (or the 4 P’s Of Marketing)  that has become widely known is Product, Price, Promotion and Place.

The 3 P’s of Marketing

All the other versions of the marketing mix have added extra P’s of marketing.

Version 1 The 3 P’s Of Tactical Marketing

This argues that product is really about positioning and because that’s about strategic marketing, the 3 P’s of tactical marketing are:

  • Price
  • Place
  • Promotion

I’m not sure myself because I see price as part of positioning as well since I think of it in terms of value gained for money sacrificed.

Version 2

This time we lose place leaving

  • Product
  • Price
  • Promotion

I have known business owners to get confused by the idea of place. It’s obvious to them because it’s the business they know and do. However, I think having it in the marketing mix services a useful purpose and forces the question

Is There Anywhere Else We Could Sell Our Products And Services?

  • Different locations – regions, countries
  • Channels – retail, wholesale, B2C, B2B
  • Online or offline
  • Can we take the product to the customers with a mobile business?

Version 3

This time the focus is on the 3 P’s that have been added to the 4 P’s to create the service marketing mix

  • People
  • Processes
  • Physical Evidence

Do they serve as a marketing mix in their own right?

I don’t think they do although I won’t underplay their importance in an extended version of the marketing mix.

The Other Versions Of The Marketing Mix

If you want to look at how the other versions have developed, here are the links.
