Why 5% Succeed by Elaine Starling with Gina Robison-Billups

The full title of this book by Elaine Starling and Gina Robison-Billups is

Why 5% Succeed: The 5 Principles of Predictable Profit“.

In my review at Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book a four stars rating. This means I think it is good.

Here is my book review.

Business advice for women. An innovative system but it requires different thinking

As a man, I’m not the target market for this book which is very much focused on helping women succeed in business.

I’ve read and reviewed a similar book in the past “The Chic Entrepreneur” which I thought was really effective because it gave business lessons through stories.

This also has plenty to offer but it’s very much based around a business model, the 5 Principles of Predictable Profit.

These are:
1- Results
2- Relevance
3- Relationships
4- Being Receptive
5- Being Resilient

The definition of Profit is a little strange because it’s the accumulation of results in four areas – Revenue, Reputation, Relationships and a Rewarding Experience.

It does get a little forced and you’re got the cyclical links that Reputation and Relationships are both the objective of what you do and how you achieve what you want. This actually makes sense because it’s the logic of virtuous circles in systems thinking or the opposite of vicious circles.

I liked the idea of turning Mum Guilt (where one side of your life takes from the other) to Mum Gift.

This is a brave book because it is very different from just about every other business book I’ve read. It took me out of my comfort zone and I suspect that it needs to be read several times before I’d feel comfortable and you might be the same. As a business coach myself, it effectively turns everything in my thinking around by 90 degrees. To be successful with the process, I feel you need to commit to it fully and not pick and choose.

It’s rare when I’m surprised by the innovative approach of a book and this deserves to be a big success. I congratulate the authors for putting the business success jigsaw pieces together in a genuinely different way.

It is available to buy from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com.
