Battling Big Box by Henry Dubroff and Susan J Marks

The full title of this book by Henry Dubroff and Susan J Marks is

Battling Big Box: How Nimble Niche Companies Can Outmaneuver Giant Competitors

In my review on Amazon.co.uk, I gave it Three Stars. This means Worthwhile.

Here is my review.

I didn’t feel that it tackled its subject

This is supposed to be a book about how small businesses can get the better of the giant competitors in their market who appear to have all the advantages. It’s a very important subject for every business owner who feels threatened.

Unfortunately it didn’t live up to expectations. I don’t think it’s a bad book about creating small business success but I never felt that it really tackled the goal that it set itself.

To beat a big business you need to identify its weakness and build up your strength to take advantage. The David and Goliath story fits the concept very well but I never got the feeling that the book was telling you how to have the courage to try or the skill to succeed.

The Battling Big Box book is based around a five step process:

1 Empower your people
2 Innovate relentlessly with your vision in mind
3 Manage cash flow
4 Build a powerful brand
5 Create the right sales strategy

I can’t quibble with any of those as they fit neatly into my own Eight Pillars of Business Prosperity approach.

The authors are both journalists although Henry Dubroff is also an entrepreneur. The book has a detached feeling – of people describing life in the trenches when they haven’t been there. I’ve no quibble with the content in Battling Big Box if you treat it as a book about small business success and it’s certainly readable.

It’s a shame the book didn’t connect with me or the issues and live up to its title.
