USP Breakthrough: The Power To Get More Customers, Close More Deals, and Charge Higher Prices

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave it 3 Stars.

Here is my review.

An interesting approach to an important topic

I’ll encourage every small business owner who has to face up to competition, to think about their USP (unique selling proposition) because its purpose is to differentiate your business.

This book starts with an offer to download a USP companion guide packed with brainstorm questions and idea generators for each of the six steps in the USP Builder Process. It sounds good but it should be in the book that people buy rather than available, presumably in exchange for an email address. I say presumably because I clicked and the page wasn’t available. Decoded: The Science Behind Why We Buy

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book Three Stars. This means Worthwhile.

Here is my review.

I hoped that I’d get more from it

The book starts with the thinking fast and slow ideas of unconscious and conscious deliberation and then links these concepts into marketing.

It’s mainly written for marketing executives within large fmcg companies and while I found some of it interesting, I’ve come across much of the content in other neuromarketing type books. You might have the same problem. [continue reading…]

It’s not the easy to read explanation of systems thinking that I was looking for

I’m puzzled why the first reviewer liked this book so much.

I think it’s a tough read. The author likes very long sentences.

It may be OK for an academic and scientific audience but I was looking for a book to explain systems thinking to small business owners who are clients with a systems problem to solve. Unfortunately this isn’t it.

Don’t believe what you read or you’re told

We are surrounded by marketing messages and blatant propaganda. It’s important to be able to challenge the “information” you receive in a logical way so that you can be better informed to the truth.

This is a useful guide to critical thinking without being definitive.

I found the style irritating with the constant mention of the critical thinker.

Your Utterly Seductive Proposal: Make your clients and offer they can’t refuse

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave it Three Stars. This means Worthwhile.

Here is my review.

The emphasis on being different

I like the idea of taking the old USP concept (unique sales proposition in America or unique selling point in the UK) and updating it to the Utterly Seductive Proposal.

I agree that the original concept looked at the differentiation concept from the perspective or the seller more than the buyer and sadly that’s true of a lot of marketing. [continue reading…]

50 Quick and Easy Ways to Outstanding Critical Thinking at Work: Your Step-By-Step Guide to Success

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book Two Stars.

Here is my review.

Disappointing

The author has written a series of Quick and Easy Ways books.

It’s clearly an appealing title but, the book I read, felt forced to fit into the formula. Each point is meant to be brief but of similar length so that means that sometimes you’ll be left wanting more, other times wondering why he wasted words (and your time).

Worst of all, I thought it was dull.

A poor educational book but a fascinating pitch

First don’t bother with the Kindle sample. It only has testimonials for the author and the index of chapters so it gives you no idea of what the book is really like.

If you’re interesting in learning how to speak to sell (stage presentations, talks to small groups, webinars, teleseminars etc) and you have a “heart centred” business (i.e. you want to help people rather than just make money) go ahead and risk the current price of 99p. [continue reading…]

This is quite a good short, concise guide to marketing and there’s little in here that I don’t agree with.

So why haven’t I given it a higher star rating? [continue reading…]
