Harvard Business Review On Managing Through a Downturn

posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book Three Stars.

Here is my review.

A collection of articles for downturns and turnarounds

The Harvard Business Review is the pre-eminent monthly business magazine for new ideas about improving business and its contributors are the top academics and practitioners.

Inevitably this means a bias towards big businesses rather than small businesses but, unlike many academic periodicals, these articles are very readable.

Included in this book are:
– How Resilience Works
– Moving Upward in a Downturn
– When Growth Stalls
– Leadership and the Psychology of Turnarounds
– Finding Your Next Core Business
– Zeitgeist Leadership
– Cutting Costs Without Drawing Blood
– Leading Through Rough Times: An Interview with Novell’s Eric Schmidt

The problem with this type of book comes in the overlaps and gaps between the articles. Inevitably it’s not a consistent, whole story.

If you own a business that is going through tough times, you’re only too aware that your time is at a premium and there’s a fine balance between researching for new ideas, developing a plan of action and then implementing it. You need to find a more complete guide.

If, on the other hand, you’re a business owner who is very aware that the business cycle has been abolished but times are currently good, this is worth reading and marking ideas that are relevant for you the next time the economy dips down.
