How to Get Unstuck by Barry Moltz

The full title of this book by Barry Moltz is

How to Get Unstuck: 25 Ways to Get Your Business Growing Again“.

In my review on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book a Four Stars rating. This means I consider it to be in the range of good to very good.

Here is my review.

An interesting look at common mistakes and how to fix them

I help business owners get unstuck but, until recently, it had never occurred to me that there would be plenty of books on the subject. It’s my intention to review them all.

This is an interesting look at common mistakes made by business owners in terms of sales and marketing, finance, managing people etc. As well as identifying the causes of the mistakes, the book also reveals how to fix them.

As such, this is a good and very useful book on topics that damage a small business. However I don’t feel that it really squares up to the issue of being stuck. Here is why:

1- For me, being stuck involves having a (hidden) constraint in a business that effectively creates a bottleneck. Whatever you try to change away from the bottleneck, it doesn’t make much difference because the constraint reduces the impact. An obvious example is a physical constraint e.g. a restaurant may only have 12 tables and once they are booked, getting more leads for each dining session doesn’t help. Alternatively, another business may have a poor lead conversion process and whilst more leads will increase sales, it makes more sense to improve the conversion process than to look for more lead generation techniques.

2- I’d have liked to have seen some kind of diagnostic tool at the start of the book to help diagnose the particular business issue(s) that need most attention.

3- I’d have liked similar topics to be grouped together. It’s impossible to do perfectly because of the overlap between topics but, for example, if your business has insufficient revenue, the topics that help you to boost sales could be grouped together.

If your business isn’t performing as well as you want, this book will be a thought-provoking read. The danger is that you’re too hard on yourself and you feel you fall short in every area. Picking the wrong one to fix first and then the wrong one again may prove frustrating. You know the business is getting better but if the numbers don’t improve, you may find it hard to sustain.

It is available to buy from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com.
