The third excellent One Minute Manager book
This is the third One Minute Manager book I recommend without hesitation. The others are the update of the original book The New One Minute Manager (The One Minute Manager) and The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey (The One Minute Manager).
The original book introduced a simple model based on management by goals/objectives. The Monkey book stops delegation going badly wrong as you try to e supportive in the wrong way. This book introduces situational leadership although it’s probably more accurate to call it situational management.
It encourages you to be flexible in the way you manage people based on the task/situation and the person based on their capabilities and commitments.
– If someone is great at their job, sets high personal standards and there’s nothing unusual about the situation, you need to get out of the way.
– If the person is a novice, you need to be much more supportive. If the situation is critical as it is when a struggling company is being turned around, the need for urgent results means a more forceful style is needed.
This is very much focused on the individual rather than the team. There is another One Minute Manager book for that but I don’t feel it’s as strong.
The light story style works well and the book can be read, understood and remembered very quickly. It may give you flashbacks to when you got things wrong. That gives you even more incentive to start putting the ideas into action.
