Pig Wrestling by Pete Lindsay and Mark Bawden

The full title of this book by Pete Lindsay and Mark Bawden is

Pig Wrestling: The Brilliantly Simple Way to Solve Any Problem… and Create the Change You Need

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book a 4 Stars rating. This means it is Good to Very Good.

Here is my book review.

Are you stuck with people problems?

This is a business fable about problem solving. In the book, an old barista at the coffee stall comes to the rescue of a young manager who has become extremely frustrated.

The barista sets the scene, which is certainly odd but do take it seriously. It has been designed too be memorable by the vividness of the illustrations.

The young manager is then passed along to other people who have been through the process to solve their problems.

It has a similar feel to some of the better “One Minute Manager” style books.

The authors think you can take it all in by reading the book once. I think that’s optimistic or perhaps my mind is resistant to some of it. I recommend reading it several times and the authors themselves give this advice at the end.

It’s claimed to be a generic problem solving technique but I’m not convinced. The way the book is written, it’s very focused on people issues.

Of course, some of it will apply anywhere, for example getting clear on the problem by seeing it for yourself rather than acting on secondhand reports.

I’m adding it to my problem solving repertoire but it’s not replacing other techniques, for example based on the theory of constraints thinking processes. Nor do I see it replacing more general critical and creative thinking methods.

I might be back to upgrade my star rating but at the moment I’m giving it four stars.
