The full title of this book by Dr Tim Lomas is

The Positive Power of Negative Emotions: How harnessing your darker feelings can help you see a brighter dawn

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book a 4 Stars rating. This means it is Good to Very Good.

Here is my book review.

Fascinating look at understanding emotions at a deeper level

A mentor emphasised to me that moving away from pain is a major source of motivation in getting a task started.

I find it to be true so I believe there are positive forces to be found in emotional pain. The author makes it clear there is a line where the negative emotion turns to mental illness, which is entirely different. If you think you’re suffering from s mental illness, see your doctor.

Each negative emotion is described in terms of a number of different characters to highlight and distinguish the different attributes. When I first read about this, I thought it was a gimmick. I now know it works very effectively.

I work as a business coach to help business owners who are stuck to get unstuck. In the past, I’ve shied away from discussing emotions directly, concentrating more on the think and then do connections. Now I’ve read this book, I feel more confident about identifying the dominant emotions and trying to guide a reframing of them to find the positive.

One reviewer has expressed concerns about the political bias in the book. The author doesn’t hide his background and his views are pushed out hard. I wonder whether a book like this could be written from a right wing perspective. I suspect it could because rarely are these things black and white. I feel I should warn you that, if you have strong right wing views, you’re likely to find this book hard to accept.

Overall this is very good book and I’m very glad I found it, bought it and read it.
