Articles & Book Reviews About The Business Owner’s Inner Game

Welcome To Pillar 2 on The Business Owner’s Inner Game

As I worked with more business owners, I came to appreciate the importance of the “inner game” in determining how successful a business owner and business would be.

What is the Inner Game?

It’s how the business owner him-or-herself performs.

It covers a wide range of topics including:

  • Having a clear vision
  • Managing your work-life balance successfully
  • Setting goals and priorities in your business
  • Managing time effectively
  • Thinking clearly and logically when required, thinking creatively when needed.
  • Making good decisions
  • Having the ability to focus on the important over the trivial

As you can see, this isn’t about accounting or sales and marketing or managing staff. It’s all about the business owner getting the maximum performance out of the most important resource the small business has – himself or herself.

The biggest aha I got from reading Michael Gerber’s book The E-Myth Revisited was the idea that a business owner has the unique ability to live life intentionally by having such direct control over both work life and personal life.

The Profit Club Material

These posts also include material from my defunct membership site called Your Profit Club, now re-christened Paul Simister’s Profit Club. This was built around the Eight Pillars of Business Prosperity.

If you want to follow along, start with Pillar 2 The Inner Game.

When Copywriters Get Stuck, How Can They Get Unstuck?

David Garfinkel is one of my business heroes, and in this 24-minute video, he talks about getting past the copywriter’s brick wall. In my terms, this is “being stuck”. You reach a plateau, and you don’t seem to be able to push forward to achieve the higher levels of success you want.

David uses the example of Tom Bady, a few days after he won the 2021 Superbowl. While this is targeted at copywriters, I recommend it to anyone who is feeling stuck in a plateau.

I’m a big believer that business owners must be intentional in their actions. They must decide what it is that they want, how they will achieve it and then organise their time and resources to do the necessary actions. Goal setting is a big part of this thinking.
