A fascinating subject
The strange way our brains can be “tricked” into making certain decisions is a fascinating subject.
While behavioural economics is a new discipline, Dan Ariely is the popular guru, charismatic in interviews. [continue reading…]

Old and American but plenty of practical advice
This book starts with some solutions to serious business problems which I think are illegal in the UK because directors of a struggling company have a duty to protect the interests of creditors and other stakeholders.
This is because it’s American and was published in the early 1990s.
If you think that means there is no reason to read the book, that would be a mistake. [continue reading…]

In my review posted on Amazon.co.uk, I gave the book Four Stars. This means it is Good and Well Worth Reading.
Here is my book review.
Very good marketing book for university
I didn’t like the recommended text book for my MBA course back in the late 1990s so I bought this one.
It’s much better. Well written and it has the best explanation of building strategy taking into account the interests of all of the stakeholders that I’ve ever read. [continue reading…]

Very interesting way to think about customers
The book explains how the three parts of the brain – reptilian (primitive fight or flight survival), limbic (emotions) and neocortex (rational thought) – are affected by marketing.
It then goes on to explain the 12 archetypes based on the work of the early psychologist, Carl Jung. [continue reading…]

Fascinating use of systems dynamics to look at the economics problems
My review seems to have disappeared but fortunately I had it on my blog although it’s possible I forgot to post it back in July 2013.
This is a fascinating book that takes virtually all of the politics out of the debate on the economic situation by building and discussing a systems dynamics model.
You hear about the annual deficits in the USA and the UK, the high growth in China and India, the troubles in the Eurozone and like me, you probably think about how these things can be connected. [continue reading…]

Get motivated
This is a very short book that takes about 20 minutes to read.
It argued that we’ve been taught the wrong lessons to achieve success. We’re urged to work hard, be self disciplined etc to strive for what we want.
Another problem is that we’re not clear on what we want. We have vague dreams and fantasies of what it would be like to be rich. [continue reading…]

A classic book on influence and persuasion
I was thinking about his recent book Pre-Suasion and I realised that I’d never reviewed this classic.
I read this book after watching or listening to various training products by other persuasion or sales and marketing experts who drew heavily on Cialdini’s work and either acknowledged it or presented the findings as their own ideas. [continue reading…]

Put the fancy stuff to one side and get back to basics
I read a lot of business books but rarely do I find one that connects so strongly with the frustrated, stressed-out business owners from the very start.
It’s not the best of book titles but it’s a metaphor that refers to a catching exercise for wide receivers in American football. [continue reading…]

Can this book rescue marketing and marketers?
I thought the author’s book Jump Start Your Business Brain was excellent when I read it and it was a no-brainer to move on to this book
Its purpose is to rescue marketing. The book starts with the assertion that between 75 per cent and 95 per cent of marketing initiatives fail. This is based on research and interviews with CEOs. [continue reading…]
