I have a love and hate relationship with the full book, The E-Myth Revisited.

An excellent summary that gives you the important ideas of Michael Gerber without the irritating bits
I believe The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don’t Work and What to Do About It is one of the most important small business books ever written. I recently wrote a blog article about the 12 best business books for business owners and it was the first I mentioned. Not because it provides all the answers but it does a great job of highlighting the problems and their causes.
It is also one of the foundation stones for the profession known as business coaching. E Myth Worldwide was the coaching business Gerber built to show how the franchise prototype can work with relatively inexperienced staff working a system rather than relying on individual knowledge and inspiration.
The big problem with the original book is the syrupy writing style of Gerber as he shares the story of Sarah and her small business All About Pies. This summary has the big advantage that it takes Gerber’s writing style out of the ideas. As far as I’m concerned, this makes for a much more pleasant read.
I’ve read the original book five or six times but it’s a painful process. This catches all the main points that I remember and I still believe the concepts show exceptional insight. The biggest point I gained from the book wasn’t what the book’s best known for. It’s the principle that the business owner has the chance to live life purposefully and design a business to support his or her lifestyle choices. Too often, business crowds out spare time and family life but it doesn’t have to be this way.
I have a battered version of the original book in my library but this is going to be the version I go back to in the future when I want to re – inject E-Myth thinking.
I gave the original book 5 stars despite the writing style. I give this the same rating.
